A free BBQ and a skate jam with prizes for 12 to 24-year-olds has been planned by Sunshine Coast Council to celebrate Queensland Youth Week from noon to 5pm on Friday, April 6 at Alex Skate Park.
For the first time, Queensland will be celebrating its own youth week on April 6-15 and council will take the opportunity to launch the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Plan which was endorsed last week.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the theme for 2018 Queensland Youth week - Jump in. Make a splash – was an ideal fit for the Sunshine Coast.
“It is only fitting we launch the new Sunshine Coast Youth Action Plan 2018-2021 during the Queensland Youth Week celebrations as this plan is all about our young people jumping in and making a splash in our community,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“This action plan ensures our young people are involved in decisions that impact on their lives and they are supported to actively participate in community life.
“Sunshine Coast Council recognises that young people are an integral part of our community, the growth of this region and our future.
“It is imperative that council continues to tap into their enthusiasm, optimism, innovation and creativity to help shape our healthy, smart, creative region.”
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay encouraged young people to grab their friends and head to the Queensland Youth Week event on April 6.
“This free event is all about celebrating the positive contribution young people make to our community and Queensland’s social, cultural, and economic life,” Cr McKay said.
“There will be a free BBQ, skate lessons and competition with awesome prizes provided by Skate-aid Australia and the Boardstore.
“This will be another great opportunity for skaters and scooter riders to test out the recently upgraded Alex Skate Park.”
The Queensland Youth Week event is an alcohol, smoke and drug-free event.
