Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging local artists with a talent for award design to express their interest in creating the prestigious 2015 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award trophies.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards celebrated the achievement and contribution of individuals and community organisations in our region.

“Imagine the prestige of having this included on your portfolio – it certainly is a great honour and a great way to acknowledge the talent and skill of our creative industry here on the Coast,” Cr McKay said

“Council commissioned local atist Kim Guthrie to design last year’s trophy.

“The result was a trophy design that was perfect for a very special group of people.

“Once again we are inviting local artists to submit a draft concept sketch, as well as cost estimates, for the design and production of these special awards."

Kim Guthrie, who has lived and worked on the Sunshine Coast for 27 years, said he chose the Bunya Pine for the 2014 tropy design because it was endemic to this region and has an instantly recognisable silhouette.

“The inclusiveness is what informed the choice of this iconic species of Australian flora for my trophy design,” he said.

“I’m honoured to have been chosen to design the 2014 trophies and can certainly recommend this opportunity to other local artists.”

Artists wishing to apply are asked to email a CV and draft sketch of the 2015 Australia Day Award design concept, as well as an estimate of production costs for eight awards to [email protected] by Friday, August 22 2014. Please note, only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.

Nominations for the Awards open Monday, September 1 and close on Friday, December 12, 2014. Entries can be completed online, downloaded from Council’s website - www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au - or picked up from Council's Customer Service Centres and library branches.
