Bulcock Street revamp continues

Work on Stage 1B of the Bulcock Street revitalisation program is now underway, focusing on the area outside Subway and the Otranto Café on Otranto Avenue.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the works will complement the recently completed facelift to the area around Felicity Park.

“The kerb will be replaced and the road resealed, and we’ll see new seating and street furniture installed,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Work is expected to be finished in late December, but this will obviously depend on the weather.

“The road resurfacing will happen at night to help minimise the inconvenience caused to the local traders.”

Major Projects Portfolio councillor Debbie Blumel said it’s exciting to see work continuing on this Major Streetscape Project.

“The work done to date looks great and it has given the area a real lift,” Cr Blumel said.

“And these beautification works are set to continue with the plans progressing for the next stage.”

Cr Dwyer said thanks to recent feedback from the local traders, the planning for Stage 2 works at the entry to Village Lane have now started.

“Council recently sought the views of traders and the Community Reference Group members and presented four options for consideration at different locations in Bulcock Street,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Option two, which is the laneway site, received the majority vote for the preferred option—it will continue the street enhancement by upgrading the lane-way entrance to the IGA with fresh directional signage, new plants and seating as well as pavement art to help draw people in to explore the opportunities provided by retailers in these areas

“Also, funds permitting, there may be an opportunity to plant the fig replacement species outside the Bank of Queensland.”

Work on stage two (the laneway entry site) is due to begin early next year after the busy school holiday period and future works will be in keeping with those already in place for Stage One near Felicity Park.

Cr Blumel said council’s Major Projects program helps to drive a sustainable region.

“By delivering major streetscapes and redevelopments, council is not only helping to boost our economy but also continue to deliver great places to live and enjoy,” Cr Blumel said.

“The next stage in this Bulcock Street revitalisation project is a great example of that commitment as it will continue to make a significant difference to this important business and tourist centre.”
