Bring history to life at the free Heritage Month Festival celebrations at Sunshine Coast Council’s library branches during April and May.

Discover military treasures, attend retro surfing movie nights, hear inspirational stories of Kokoda Track guides, enjoy a photographic exhibition on the 100 years of the Australian Red Cross and so much more.

This is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the places and stories that make Australia special. It is also a time to remind us of the importance of conserving and protecting our natural heritage, rich Indigenous heritage and the diverse historic sites that help form our cultural identity.

Military Treasures

Wednesday, April 23, 10 – 11.30am, Caloundra Library

Join Joe McCaffrey to discover the treasures from Australia’s military history held at the Maroochydore RSL Museum.

Australian Red Cross

100 Years People Helping People Exhibition

Wednesday, April 23 – Friday, May 2, Nambour Library

See a photographic display of the Australian Red Cross on the Coast, memorabilia over 100 years and meet members of the local Red Cross.

Retro Surfing Movie Night

Tuesday, April 29, 6 – 8pm, Caloundra Library

Come along and help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Ma and Pa Bendall Memorial Surfing contest 1974-2014 and watch rare footage on the early days of surfing in Australia. Be entertained by Kalani on the ukulele.

Kokoda Track

Thursday, May 1, 11am – 12.30pm, Caloundra Library

Join No Roads Expeditions guides Rhys Livingstone and Ryan O’Neill for a first-hand experience of the Kokoda Trail. This informative talk will include footage and slides.

The Journey

Wednesday, May 7, 1.30 – 3pm, Caloundra Library

Join Brian and Erica Costigan on their journey to find the Centaur, the hospital ship which sunk off Moreton Bay on May 14, 1942.

Climbing History of the Glass House Mountains

Friday, May 9, 10.30am – noon, Beerwah Community Hall

Join Professor Michael Meadows from Griffith University School of Humanities when he shares his interesting stories and photographs of the climbers of the 1930s, many of whom were women.

Celebrate National Archaeology Week

Tuesday, May 20, 5.30 – 6.30pm, Maleny Library

Hear Maleny archaeologists Steve Chaddock and Andrew Fairbairn talk about their experiences on a dig in Konya, Turkey. Steve works for Timeline Heritage and Dr Andrew Fairbairn is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Queensland.
