Some of Australia’s sharpest performers in the Information Technology industry will provide career advice and expertise to local secondary school students at Thursday’s Big Day In event at the University of Sunshine Coast.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Big Day In was part of a series of national IT and technology careers conferences held by the ACS Foundation that provides thousands of high school leavers and university students with information about careers in the technology industry and connects them directly with some of Australia’s largest technology employers, Small Medium Enterprises and entrepreneurial start-ups.
“The Big Day In is an outstanding way for technology companies, enterprises with significant ICT departments and tech hubs to promote the career opportunities they can provide to young people in the future,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Council is extremely pleased to partner with the Big Day In and this nationally recognised event will be a fantastic way to start our Future Careers+ program, that aims to make young people on the Sunshine Coast aware of the career opportunities that are likely to be available to them in the year 2025 within our seven high value industries.”
“The Sunshine Coast is home to a growing number of successful IT start-up businesses like Schoolzine, Zerobooks, The Creative Collective, Traffika, Retail Express, Atmail and Queensland Digital Champion Mic Black.
“Mic will be among the outstanding guest speakers presenting on Thursday and it will be terrific for local students to hear from a young entrepreneur in our region who is achieving outstanding success in the IT industry.”
Other guest speakers from Microsoft, The Creative Collective, Adobe, Wise Tech Global, Technology One and Telstra will present at the Big Day In that will be held at the USC Innovation Centre from 9am to 2:30pm.
Around 380 students across the region have already registered for the event. ACS Foundation Executive Director John Ridge AM said it was a terrific response.
“This is the first time we’ve held a Big Day In on the Sunshine Coast and the response has been very encouraging,” he said.
“To have nearly 400 students registered to attend on Thursday is fantastic and with the wonderful list of highly credentialed guest speakers I’m confident that all young people who attend will take something very positive away from the event.”
