‘Beautiful town heart’ project gains momentum
The local community’s ideas and aspirations for Cribb Street, Landsborough are becoming a reality with the construction of stage 2 of Cribb Street upgrade now underway.
A local community’s aspirations for an historic hinterland town are becoming a reality.
The next stage of the community-led planned improvements for Landsborough’s main street is about to take shape, with works on the Cribb Street Streetscape now underway.
Sunshine Coast Council’s placemaking team has worked with the Landsborough community over several years to develop an overall master plan with a key focus to beautify and improve the town's historic main street, which has received funding from the State Government.
The project is part of the multi-stage Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan, endorsed by Council in January 2020.
Council completed the first stage of the Cribb Street streetscape project in 2021 and is now starting work on the second and final stage.
Division One Councillor Rick Baberowski said the streetscape project aimed to create a stronger, more functional destination and beautiful town heart.
“Thank you to all those who provided feedback throughout our extensive consultation on the Placemaking Master Plan and Cribb Street designs, generously giving your input and time to shape this town’s community heart for all to enjoy for years to come,” Cr Baberowski said.
“Together we are creating a really special community hub that will work even better for locals, commuters and visitors, with a design that reflects Landsborough’s wonderful layers of history and character, while working well as a relaxed country town.
What improvements are on the way
“This next stage of the streetscape project will focus on the park/station side of Cribb Street which will provide an improved central gathering space for the community to come together.
“The park improvements will complement and amplify the works already completed as part of the first stage of the streetscape project - adding even more amenity and functionality to the main street as a place for locals to enjoy, commuters to move efficiently through and visitors to discover.”
Features of the new space include shelters and seating, a play space, lawn area for community events, more shade trees and creative lighting elements to build on the signature night-time lighting of the township.
Modern touches for a town steeped in history
Council will also install an expanded heritage trail developed with the community.
“Landsborough is a beautiful country town that mixes its heritage well with being a contemporary country town," Cr Baberowski said.
“It is also considered by many to be the gateway to the hinterland but its museum, historic pub and improved range of eateries also means it’s an excellent place to have a bite to eat, learn about local history and enjoy some exceptional public spaces.
“It is a town with the layers of history that only gets better with age and we are proud to have involved local Sunshine Coast architects who designed the new shelters that will add a unique focal point for the street, while providing more practical shade and shelter.
“The shelter design reflects Landsborough’s timber history and the geometry of the gabled roofs and arches we see in the local buildings.
“The consultants worked with an artist to develop the really special geometric 'pods' which will be suspended within an arbour, providing shade during the day and feature lighting in the evening.
“The pods reference our region’s Bunya Nut trees, which were once plentiful in the area, providing food sources and a natural resource to support First Nations gatherings, trade and ceremony.”
State Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said the State Government was investing in fast-growing communities through the $100 million South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program.
“This is something I know the local community is passionate about, and I’m proud the government has been able to work with the council to deliver this project,” Mr Hunt said.
“Through the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Fund we’re investing more than $9 million into infrastructure projects on the Sunshine Coast – that’s on top of other major projects right across our community.
“This revamp for Cribb Street is just one of the projects we’re supporting to make our community an even better place, while also delivering good local jobs.”
The landscaping of the first stage is maturing nicely and delivered a range of improvements including pedestrian crossings that connect the shops and park areas, new seating areas, landscaped garden beds, street trees and improved footpaths.
Cribb Street Streetscape Stage 2 works are expected to be completed in mid-2024.
