Be prepared for king tide on the Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Council is getting ready for the impact of high tides that are expected to be slightly higher than January 2012 and powerful seas on exposed beaches for the next couple of days.

Local Disaster Co-ordinator, Alan Rogers said the Local Disaster Management Group is on alert in response to warnings by the Bureau of Meteorology of very high tides and dangerous surf over the next 48 hours.

"The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting that Friday and Saturday morning high tides will be about 30cm?or one foot higher than today," Mr Rogers said.

"This may mean possible flooding in low lying coastal areas. Council staff will monitor these roads and information about any road closures will be available on council’s website.

"Saturday is the first day of the school holidays and people swimming, camping or even driving are asked to be aware of high tides and occasional large sets of waves and to take extra care when on the beach.

"Swimmers are advised not to swim on exposed beaches due to dangerous surf and rips – as always, swim only between the flags and chat with the local life guard if you are unsure of local conditions."

People staying in caravan parks or camping on the beach need to be aware of the high tides and be prepared to take advice from the site manager or National Parks and Wildlife staff. ?
