Woombye Districts Community Bank is all about grass roots support, as most community banks are.

But today, the Bendigo Bank branch has proved how literally it has understood what that means, by dedicating stage 1 of a revitalised McCarthy Park to its community.

"It’s not only more grass roots and the resulting open space for all to enjoy – it’s new trees planted and a sense of peace and tranquillity, and all for the benefit of the people of Woombye," Mayor Mark Jamieson said.

The Mayor said the origin of the park’s transformation goes back to the banks’ Community Forum held in 2010.

"A partnership struck between the bank and Sunshine Coast Council has produced a wonderful result which we can see here today," he said.

"It follows a community consultation process begun in May of last year, to capture the vision of the local community – and that vision is now present, in this park, today."

The park’s improvements include a multi-purpose play space, new lawns, refurbished playground gear and connecting paths.

Divisional councillor Jenny McKay said the journey from 2010 to today had proven worthwhile.

"You only have to look around you today to see how this park has been transformed," Cr McKay said.

"This is a fantastic outcome and the result of a wonderful partnership between the community, the bank and the council.

"It’s also wonderful to see so many people here today to acknowledge the community‘s support for the project."
