Australian legend and pioneer of Indigenous theatre comes to the Coast for one performance only

Sunshine Coast Council presents Jack Charles V The Crown, a powerful one-man show that shines the spotlight on the colourful life of one of Australia’s near forgotten treasures, at Nambour Civic Centre on Wednesday 26 June at 7.30pm.

Jack is an actor, musician, potter and gifted performer, but for a good portion of his nearly 70 years he has also been homeless, an addict, a thief and a regular in Victoria’s prisons. A member of the Stolen Generation, Jack has spent his life in between acting gigs caught in the addiction/crime/doing time cycle. And he lives to tell the extraordinary tale.

A respected Aboriginal elder who pioneered Koorie theatre in the early 70s, he founded the first Aboriginal theatre company (Nindethana). He was a television and theatre regular and the star of movies including The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith.

Over the years, Jack has performed with the cream of Australia’s actors and directors including Geoffrey Rush, Neil Armfield, and Tracey Moffat.

Ilbijerri Theatre Company, is the longest existing Indigenous theatre company in Australia, and to celebrate their 20 year anniversary in 2010, they teamed up with Jack Charles and prolific writer John Romeril (winner of the 2008 Patrick White Award) to bring Jack’s entertaining and uplifting story to the stage in Jack Charles V The Crown.

Jack’s constant and unswerving optimism, his generosity of spirit and his humanity shine through in this powerful one-man show, which tells the tale of a living legend’s colourful past, while also looking to the future where Jack is passionate and determined to help those heading down a destructive path.

Due to adult themes, this performance is recommended for ages 13 years and over. Cost to attend is $42 for adults, $35 for concessions and for groups of eight or more, $32 for subscribers, or $25 for 25 years and under.
