Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) to present Class Clowns, a national secondary school comedy competition and workshop program aimed at young people aged 14 to 17 years.

Class Clown workshops and heats are being held in capital cities and regional areas right across the country. Finalists will travel to Melbourne to compete in the grand final and for the chance to win $1000 for themselves and $1000 for their school!

Council’s free crash course workshops will be held on Saturday 30 April at Coolum Civic Centre, Nambour Black Box Theatre and Kawana Community Hall.

Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the workshops were a fantastic chance for young students to showcase their unique talents to a live audience and have the opportunity to work with one of the industry’s leading professionals.

“Class Clowns helps young people develop their writing and performing skills in the comic arts as well as creating a platform that will enable young performers to gain performing experience and exposure,” she said.

At the free workshops, participants – who have prepared up to five minutes of stand-up comedy, a group sketch, musical parody, or something else in between – will participate in a workshop with a professional, practising comedian. They will then present their act at the Class Clowns Heats to a real, live, public audience.

With more than 18 years of industry experience, comedian Mandy Nolan will be the Sunshine Coast’s workshop mentor. Over the years Mandy has worked alongside celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Ertha Kit, and Bob Downe.

The group size for workshops is capped at 25 attendees and students can only attend one workshop. To register, visit council’s website, search for class clowns and follow the instructions. Be quick as registrations close Wednesday 27 April.

Timed to coincide with the Comedy Festival's Touring Roadshow, the Sunshine Coast Class Clowns heat will be held at Nambour Civic Centre on Saturday 21 May 2011. The winner will go through to the Queensland State Final at Brisbane Powerhouse.
