You don’t have to wear lycra to love Bike Week; starting this weekend Sunshine Coast Council is coordinating 21 free sessions across the Coast with a variety the whole family will enjoy.

During Bike Week, 12 to 20 March you’ll find events and workshops that show a different side to cycling, everything from women’s sessions and kids progression from training wheels, to BMX clinics and night time trail rides.

Integrated Transport Portfolio Councillor Vivien Griffin said council is committed to encouraging active transport and part of that is showing how much fun things like cycling can be.

"Bike Week is a great way to try new things and shows you don’t need to be super fit to have fun on a bike," Cr Griffin said.

"It’s certainly a great way to stay healthy and active with friends and family and it’s practical too.

"Last year I attended one of the more practical sessions; basic bike maintenance. I now know how to fix my own bike."

Activities are free and cater for every age group, activity level and interest, some examples are:

  • cycle skills and games
  • group rides
  • come and try – Introduction to bike orienteering
  • women’s workshop and ride
  • night train mountain bike rides
  • sunset beach ride
  • BMX come and try racing clinic
  • mountain bike rides
  • progression from training wheels
  • getting started in cycling
