Summer placement opportunities for uni students

University students and recent graduates have the chance to gain real-world experience with the return of Sunshine Coast Council’s My Summer Workplace program.

Sunshine Coast Council’s Business Portfolio Councillor Chris Thompson said this was a fantastic opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic students seeking to gain experience in local government.

“Council is offering 18 places across a range of business areas where students can apply the knowledge and skill they’ve gained through academic study to actual workplace situations under the direct supervision of a knowledgeable and experienced supervisor," Cr Thompson said.

“However, we are also keen for the students to test innovative ideas and solutions across the organisation in order to further develop their own academic and career goals.”

My Summer Workplace placements are available in the areas of Business, Civil Engineering, Ecology / Landscaping, Event Management, Environment / Carbon, Hydraulics (Diploma of Hydraulic Building Engineering will be considered for this placement), Information Technology, International Business / Marketing, Library and Information Services, Property Economics and Urban Design.

Applications close on  September 28 and the program will run from November 16 to February 25, with a two-week break from December 21 to January 3.

Successful candidates will work 28 hours per week over four day and will be paid a nominal stipend during the 12-week program to help cover transport, food and housing costs. Workplace locations vary depending on the department.

Cr Thompson said the program will benefit both students and Council.

“While these students gain practical experience, the program allows Council to pursue its leadership role as a major Sunshine Coast employer,” Cr Thompson said.

“The program also develops the region’s talent by providing employment opportunities that help shape a resilient community and a sustainable economy.”
