From 1 November council will start work on the $2million upgrade of the Mons Road underpass at Forest Glen that will improve safety and alleviate traffic congestion.
The joint partnership between Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Main Roads includes the widening of the Mons Road underpass and the installation of traffic lights at the Forest Glen, Bruce Highway on ramps.
Works are scheduled from 1 November 2010 through to April 2011, weather permitting.
Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford said the project will relieve congestion and improve safety, especially at school drop off and pick up times.
“Traffic lights will be installed at both entrances to the underpass to control traffic movements and improve safety, taking the guess work out of merging.
“The widening of the underpass allows for a left hand turning lane at the lights, which should dramatically improve the traffic flow,” Cr Hungerford said.
“What the widening also allows for is the provision a pedestrian pathway and dedicated cycle lane either side of the underpass to tie in with the South East Queensland Principal Cycle Network.
“To get the job done, it will be necessary to reduce traffic to one lane however this work is scheduled for completion during the school holidays and if the weather is kind, will be complete by January 2011.
“Getting the traffic flowing is the first step for Forest Glen, the second will be a road through from Owen Creek Road, straight through to the Grammar School, as per the Forest Glen Master Plan amendment—I’ll be lobbying for this to come on line as soon as possible.”
During the project, traffic management will be coordinated to avoid peak periods and the works will not impact access to and from the Bruce Highway.
