The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its love of leisure, sport and recreation and residents who have captured this passion on film are encouraged to submit their photos for publication in next year’s Sunshine Coast heritage calendar.
Entries for the Playtime – 2018 Heritage Calendar open today (August 28) and council is inviting the community to dig out old pre-1980 photo albums in search of their favourite photos depicting our region at play.
Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the calendar was an opportunity for the community to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s history of leisure, sport and recreation through the lens of a camera.
“We are looking for moments in time showcasing the Coast at play. This is a great way to recognise the history of the region and to celebrate the diversity which contributes so much to our region’s character and heritage,” said Cr Baberowski.
“We are inviting all community members to get involved and send in their favourite photos of the Sunshine Coast’s leisure lifestyle prior to the 1980s.
“This year’s calendar was a sell-out, with its 12 months of historical and contemporary photographs celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.
“In 2018 the calendar will focus on people at play on the Sunshine Coast.
“We would love to see pre-1980s photos of people swimming, surfing, sailing, playing cricket in the backyard, dancing, sand castle competitions, team sports and more.”
Winners will not only be credited in the calendar, they will also receive a canvas of their winning entry, five copies of the 2018 calendar to share with family and friends and an invitation to the calendar launch event.
“This will definitely be a precious keepsake capturing this fun and active part of our lifestyle here on the Coast,” Cr Baberowski said.
“I encourage anyone with a historic image reflecting sport, recreation or leisure activities to enter and get involved.”
Entries close at 5pm, Monday, September 25.
The Heritage Levy funded calendar is produced annually as a way to celebrate and remember the region’s heritage.
To enter, heritage images can be submitted online or in person through Sunshine Coast Libraries or Council Customer Contact Centres. Photographs must be owned by the entrant.
