Council and Telstra have partnered again for the 4th Annual Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards. Over $10,000 in prizes are available, including:

  • an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney for the Top Team, and
  • most outstanding Female Entrepreneur.

Last year 33 students from five schools across the Sunshine Coast participated in the awards. This initiative encourages young people to use problem-solving and creativity to find solutions that could benefit a wide audience.

The awards are a fantastic opportunity for students in years ten to twelve to showcase their ideas. They can also enjoy a mentoring program run by a range of entrepreneurs and industry experts. This program equips teams with contemporary experience, and how to make ideas commercial through:

  • following lean principles in product development
  • finding product market fit through design thinking.

The competition helps bring creative ideas to life. It connects students with industry mentors to develop entrepreneurial thinking. Telstra and council are on the look out for new and creative use of technology or the next technological idea.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said of the 2018 Program "Initiatives like the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards, Start-Up Weekend, Coder Dojo, Generation Innovation, Future Careers and Big Day In all encourage our bright young minds and out-of-the-box thinkers to emerge. This year’s entries were by far some of the most impressive we’ve had the privilege to judge. Over the past four weeks, and here tonight, we’ve been blown away by the talent, ingenuity and strategies employed by all students to take a problem and develop a solution. Knowledge and professional services is one of the seven high-value industries that are keys to future employment and economic prosperity on the Sunshine Coast. We’re very fortunate to have so many talented young people in our healthy, smart and creative region and I’m sure many of you here tonight will go on to be future leaders of the Sunshine Coast."
