Yamato - Japanese Drummers World Tour

Venue 114 will host an exclusive, world class drumming event, Yamato, on Sunday August 18 from 3 to 5pm.

Yamato was formed in 1993, debuting at a Shinto shrine festival. Over the last 25 years they’ve toured 54 countries and appeared in over 3,500 performances – more than any other Japanese performing arts group. Their performances have also drawn more than seven million viewers.

Yamato is based in a village called Asuka, which is regarded as the birthplace of Japanese culture. The group’s performances, which feature various stage formations, have received rave reviews, with British media describing their sound as "The music of the body."

Yamato consists of dozens of drummers who begin their performance by hitting Japanese taiko drums which are made from 400 year-old trees. Their energetic performances create a powerful sound and a surge of energy which audiences cannot help but feel.

This group exhibits great originality and innovation through the traditional Japanese musical instrument, the wadaiko (Japanese drum). This is the epitome of the Japanese spirit, a roaring sound that will make you experience new exciting adventures.

Creativity is the motto of Yamato. This is why, aside from the musical instruments, the members of the group live together in a community to create everything themselves. This includes the musical compositions, theatre productions, theatre settings, lighting design, choreography, performance techniques, costumes, makeup, stage settings and even the bachi (sticks) used in the performances.

Yamato uses this creativity to convert wadaiko into a performing art that can reverberate in Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world.
