The Sunshine Coast, the new driving force for film productions
The Sunshine Coast hinterland has been showcased at the global launch of Subaru’s latest WRX model, putting the region on the map for future production locations.
The company is so impressed with the region’s beauty and the assistance provided by Sunshine Coast Council during the production shoot, they are keen to return.
Subaru Global Marketing Division Manager Masahiro Iwasaki said Subaru wanted to express a pleasant “driving feel” of the new WRX and WRX STI.
“The winding roads of the Sunshine Coast were exactly the right place to show the sporty driving performance of Subaru,” Mr Iwasaki said.
“In addition, from WRX sales point of view, Australia is a very important market for Fuji Heavy Industries - this is another reason why we chose Sunshine Coast for the filming.
“After the shoot, we were happy with the quality of the video and we also appreciated Sunshine Coast’s full cooperation for our filming.
“If allowed the opportunity, we would like to visit there again for another video shoot.”
Dynamite Productions managed the Subaru promotion, film location manager Duncan Jones saying the Sunshine Coast was an obvious choice as the central location for the car company’s world launch of its newest models.
“With the director’s brief primarily to scout for unusual hinterland settings for the production shoot, the meandering Beerburrum, Maleny and Glasshouse roads featuring the Glasshouse Mountains as a backdrop was a perfect match,” Mr Jones said.
“But you also need to have the support of the local council, suitable accommodation in close proximity to the shoot location and various logistics assistance including an easily accessible air and road infrastructure network.
“We found all this and more for over 60 crew members throughout a two day filming period on the Sunshine Coast. The remainder of the five day shoot was in Brisbane.”
Mr Jones said the majority of the Japanese and Queensland crew members had never visited the Sunshine Coast.
“From the feedback I received, all enjoyed a very positive experience with many planning a return visit with family and friends,” Mr Jones said.
“I hope the Sunshine Coast continues to provide and support a range of film production options and I certainly encourage other film companies to consider including this great region in their next production.”
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was not surprised the Sunshine Coast had been selected for the Subaru shoot.
“I am pleased to see our own winding roadsides across Beerburrum, Maleny and Glasshouse Mountains captured on the big screen for world-wide screenings of the new Subaru models,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“These types of large scale film productions provide a big monetary boost to the local economy over a very short period of time, not to mention the promotional tourist drawcard many productions may then provide to the region through ongoing viewings of the footage.
“With our region’s diverse range of locations suiting a wide-variety of filming options, our various accommodation choices and supporting business infrastructure, the Sunshine Coast is the perfect place for film productions and certainly an industry we will support and foster to grow.”
