Securing Noosa Spit: new upgrades and facilities launched

A BBQ breakfast will commemorate the launch the new rock wall, interpretive and recreation facilities at Noosa Spit, to be opened by Division 11 Cr Russell Green and Chairman of Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) Paul Wilsteed – tongs in hand.

“It’s a great pleasure for Council and NICA to be formally opening the new erosion control wall and community facilities at Noosa Spit,” said Cr Green.

“This initiative is in response to public concerns over the stability of the Noosa River mouth that threatened to undermine the road at Noosa Spit and possibly lead to a break that would see the mouth of the river migrating south.”

In 2006-07, Council applied to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for funding to construct the rock wall to secure the area, along with fishing platforms and a new pathway, now completed. Additional community and environmental benefit was realised as Council worked collaboratively with NICA to install a telescope for observing birdlife, develop interpretative signage and the installation of fishing line recovery bins, with funding through South East Queensland Catchments.

As part of the project, NICA has also contributed significant resources through research regarding shorebird behaviour that allows community to observe and learn about our important migratory species. They continue this work to build a database of observations on behaviour and habitat requirements for resident and migratory shorebird species within the Noosa River and Noosa North Shore beaches.

Council is also considering possible solutions to address the beach erosion at Dog Beach, to the south of the river mouth.
