Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to get involved in the nation’s biggest community-based environment event – Clean Up Australia Day – on Sunday March 1.

Volunteers can either join an existing site or form a group and register a site on the Clean Up Australia website.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she encouraged all Sunshine Coast residents to be part of the day, which is supported by Council and its waste collection contractor Remondis.

“I encourage people to get together with friends and family to clean up and fix their favourite areas in our beautiful region,” Cr McKay said.

“Registered sites will receive a Clean Up kit including bags, gloves, event information and public liability cover.”

Cr McKay said 2015 marked the 25th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day.

“We consistently receive great community support for this event – there are usually around 1000 volunteers at over 70 clean-up sites, and I hope we can continue that trend this year.

“There are many Sunshine Coast community groups who have been participating in Clean Up Australia Day since it started, and in some cases, even longer.

“Thank you to those groups, and the many individuals who join in, for their ongoing efforts – we know ‘Clean Up’ is an everyday activity for many of you.”

As part of the Clean Up Australia Day program, Business Clean Up Day is on February 24 and Schools Clean Up Day is on February 27.
