Reality Bites in Noosa

Reality Bites is a program focused on non-fiction that promises to be wide ranging, thought provoking and enjoyable. From memoir to biography, history to socio political commentary, satire, film, documentary and verbatim theatre, literary sparks are sure to fly over the weekend.

A literary feast for writers and readers

Reality Bites is a program focused on non-fiction that promises to be wide ranging, thought provoking and enjoyable. From memoir to biography, history to socio political commentary, satire, film, documentary and verbatim theatre, literary sparks are sure to fly over the weekend.

Reality organiser, Bernice Childs, said the non-fiction theme had been determined following research on existing writers’ festivals around the country.

“While most festivals now include a non-fiction component in their programming, none have a total focus on non fiction. Non-fiction is also the biggest selling category of books in bookshops and has an overwhelming presence on the Internet.”

Presenters at Reality Bites include well known, award winning writers such as Susanna de Vries with 14 books published, journalist Gideon Haigh with more than 20 books published, and John Birmingham, best known for He Died With A Falafel In His Hand and more recently, Leviathan: the unauthorised biography of Sydney which won Australia’s National Prize for Non-Fiction.

Several presenters will have books released around the time of Reality Bites.

  • Art Life Chooks: Learning to leave the city and love the country by local writer Annette Hughes, published by Harper Collins, will be launched at the Reality Bites opening at Berkelouw Books Eumundi on Friday 4 July. This is an engaging, fresh, and funny book about moving out of your comfort zone.
  • Sandy Mackinnon’s, The Unlikely voyage of Jack de Crow, published by Black Inc. and also launched in the first week of July, takes the reader along on a voyage from North Wales to the Black Sea – 4,900 kilometres over salt and fresh water – through 12 countries.
  • Recently released by University Queensland Publishing, Virginia Lloyd’s The Young Widow's Book of Home Improvement is a wry and touching love story that plays with the parallels between our homes and ourselves.

These highly experienced Reality guests will share their extraordinary stories, challenge and debate concepts of contemporary culture and human rights, and reveal some of their personal experiences in writing non-fiction.
