Sunshine Coast Stadium will host the Oztag Australia State of Origin this weekend (May 2 and 3), showcasing the best of Queensland and New South Wales Oztag in a State versus State tag off.

Division 3 Councillor Peter Cox said the annual  competition rotated between NSW and Queensland each year.

“Held in Canberra last year, the rivalry is running hot and both states are ready to rumble on the Sunshine Coast in 2015,” Cr Cox said.

“This event was last held at Caloundra in 2012 and has been to various NSW locations such as Coffs Harbour and Wollongong.

“The growth of this sport has made the Sunshine Coast Stadium, with its premier fields and facilities, an ideal choice as host.

“This year we are expecting more than 1500 players and spectators across two days of competition.

“The senior competition will be held on Saturday, May 2 and will see 12 divisions totalling 380 players with the junior competition on Sunday, May 3 having 16 divisions totalling 512 players.”

Oztag Australia tournament director Bill Harrigan said the rivalry between the two states was stronger than ever.

“Last year NSW took a cleansweep in all 12 senior divisions, so this year Queensland are looking for the win,” Mr Harrigan said.

“However, Queensland won the junior girls 13s and 15s so both states are looking to keep the momentum running.”

Competition runs from 9am to 4pm both days, with free entry for spectators.

And if this isn’t enough state-on-state action for you, mark Wednesday, May 27 in your calendar for the Sunshine Coast Stadium State of Origin event.

Watch all of the action of Game 1 live on the big screen – from your own grandstand seat.

There’ll be free entertainment and rides for the kids and plenty of prizes to win. Visit Council’s venues website for more information.
