More secure, more sustainable and more visually appealing.

That’s the blueprint for the new Tickle Park toilet block in Coolum. The $450,000 project includes the construction of a new public amenities block consisting of unisex and wheelchair accessible toilets, wash basins and external showers.

Division 9 Councillor Vivien Griffin said new connecting pathways, landscaping and artwork would also be features of the soon-to-be-built facility.

"The new block will be located near the existing toilet facility but closer to the Tickle Park playground and shelters," she said.

"This location will allow greater casual surveillance of the facility from the nearby shelters and playground which will provide peace of mind for parents with young children.

"These works are part of the Coolum Streetscape works highlighted in the Coolum Village Centre Landscape Master Plan.

"The look and feel of the works will also reflect the Coolum Boardwalk and recently completed Coolum Surf Life Saving Club artwork."

Cr Griffin said the new toilet block would also be fitted with four rain water tanks.

"This water will be used in the toilets that are also fitted with recycling capabilities so overall water usage in this new block will be less which is good news for the environment," she said.

"The existing pandanus palm trees beside the old toilet block will be removed and re-planted as part of the landscaping works around the new block.

"Council has also shortlisted four local artists and will shortly choose one to proceed with the art works that will be incorporated on the outside of the new facility."

Cr Griffin said Tickle Park would remain fully operational while works were in progress.

"All playgrounds, shelters, car parks and barbeques will be available for use as normal and the old toilet block will remain open and operational until the new one is finished," she said.

"The special movie night on 19 March will also proceed as planned."

Construction of the new toilet block will begin on 21 March and is set for completion in June.
