New experiential garden encourages kids to discover the bush

A new playground with a difference has been opened at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanical Gardens in time for the school holidays.

The new ‘Whipbird Walk’ has been carefully designed in a beautiful natural bush setting to mimic opportunities for nature based play.

Cr Jenny McKay, who opened the Sunshine Coast Council playground, hopes the garden will give kids across the Sunshine Coast the freedom to experience the joys of being in touch with nature.

“This garden gives kids the chance to balance on fallen logs, make cubby houses from sticks, play in the dirt and look for creepy crawlies,” Cr McKay said.

“There’s also a great sensory trail complete with blindfolds that encourages kids and families to open all their senses to the environment around us.

“This garden has been a labour of love and a real gift to the Sunshine Coast community and is a testament to the collaboration between Council, the friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, Buderim Garden Club, Buderim Foundation and the Casuarina Garden Club.

Sunshine Coast Council’s new Whipbird Walk experiential garden incorporates interpretative artwork designed to engage, intrigue and amuse children’s imaginations whilst also provoking a curiosity of nature.

A family fun day to celebrate the opening of Whipbird walk will be held Saturday 16th September at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanical Gardens from 10am-2pm.
