A combined library / learning and arts exhibition space for Kawana Waters is just one community facility approved today by Council as part of its planning for strong, cohesive communities.

Other facilities slated for delivery include a Community / Life Guard centre, a Surf Life Saving Club, a community / civic domain and a public access club at Bokarina Beach; a Community Centre at Birtinya and community halls or meeting spaces at Kawana Forest, Currimundi and Kawana Island.

Delivery will be safeguarded by the Kawana Waters Community Development Strategy, a requirement of the Kawana Waters Development Agreement between Council and the master developer – Stockland, and by amendments to the Kawana Waters Structure Plan.

Division 1 and Social Strategy Portfolio holder, Cr Anna Grosskreutz said planning for social needs in new areas was vital to create cohesive, strong communities.

“Planning that delivers the goods is at the heart of council’s vision for strong communities and strong social networks for the families, singles, young and not so young who call the Sunshine Coast home,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“As new areas are planned Council is committed to fostering a sense of belonging by working with the development industry to provide well designed places and spaces where residents can get together to enjoy life, each other and shared interests in the community they are part of.”

Additional facilities and needs, identified through stakeholder and community consultation include community gardens and markets, pedestrian safety, ‘end of trip’ facilities for cyclists, public toilets, adequate sports facilities and gave priority to an investigation for a skate park.
