More and more kids Walking Safely to School each year

Sunshine Coast students continued the trend and set yet another record for Walk Safely to School Day in 2016.

Acting Mayor Cr Tim Dwyer said that after a 43% increase in 2015, there was another 42% jump this year, with a total of 1523 students registering.

“This national event is an initiative by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, with council coordinating the competition to encourage participation in the event, as part of its TravelSmart program to help kids get moving and improve their health,” Cr Dwyer said.

“It’s great to see so much participation and enthusiasm from the students.

“High participation can be credited to school involvement. Schools that take time to promote and explain the event see higher registration and participation on the day.

“A total of 51 schools were involved this year, making our school zones safer with reduced traffic conditions.

“Amazingly, the students walked a total of 2691km, which is equivalent to the distance between Adelaide and Perth!

“Of the students who participated, 324 of them were actually walking to school for the first time.

“There were 85% of participants who travelled 2km or less to school and hopefully they will continue walking to school more often in the future.

“Walking regularly is so beneficial. It can prevent illnesses, obesity, diabetes and behavioural and mental health issues.

“Special mention should be given to Brightwater State School for having the most number of registrants, and both Yandina State School and Currimundi State School for having the joint highest percentage of participation.

“Students who registered went in the draw for a range of great prizes. The winners will be drawn this week and notified soon after.

“This event is one way that council is encouraging more people to choose an active, healthy lifestyle.”
