Sunshine Coasters love their fresh food, fruit and top restaurants which are all readily available right here in their regional backyard.

But our neighbours in Auckland and surrounds are also developing an enviable reputation in the culinary world.

And recently, My Kitchen Rules grand finalists, the Sunshine Coast’s own Jake and Elle Harrison, jumped on to the Sunshine Coast-Auckland Air New Zealand flight to discover just how sophisticated that market has become.

“We had a fantastic trip across the Ditch,” Jake said.

“They are doing great foodie things over there in Auckland right now – and the Food Show Auckland is coming up on August 1st to 4th so if you love your food and wine, get over there.”

Elle said it was “so good to be able to jump a flight to New Zealand without that big long trip south through the congestion”.

Jake and Elle decided to promote the growing Aussie-Kiwi culinary relationship at Sunshine Coast Airport today, by serving up some good ol’ Aussie pikelets at Sunshine Coast Airport, for outbound passengers on the Air New Zealand flight.

And they invited Sunshine Coast feijoa grower Sally Hookey from Hinterland Feijoas – a member of the Sunshine Coast Council-supported Seasons of the Sun movement – along to “spread” the love with her feijoa jam.

“Feijoas are the ‘real’ Kiwi fruit’,” Sally said.

“New Zealanders love them, and today is a great opportunity to let departing locals get a taste of New Zealand’s favourite fruit before getting on the flight.”

Economic Development/Tourism portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray dropped in to say g’day – and share a few photos with the team.

“We’re getting plenty of Kiwis over on the Air New Zealand flights to enjoy a bit of winter warmth,” he said, “but Auckland’s renowned culinary delights and the Food Show Auckland is a big reason for locals to think about a break over there”.

Airport general manager Peter Pallot said Air New Zealand ticket sales had already eclipsed total sales in the 2012 season.

“Residents in and around around Sunshine Coast Airport are enjoying the convenience of flying directly from Sunshine Coast Airport, to reach Auckland, the South Island, and even the USA, without all the hassle of city congestion to battle,” he said.

The Food Show Auckland runs from August 1 to 4. A Sunshine Coast display consisting of Seasons of the Sun, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd and a number of other culinary partners will be at the Show.

Air New Zealand flies twice weekly from the Sunshine Coast to Auckland on Tuesdays and Sundays until October 13.
