Mayor Abbot leads the panel in sustainability forum

The Sunshine Coast Council is a proud partner of the free World Environment Day festival, Saturday May 31 at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

This year’s United Nations theme is ‘CO2 Kick the Habit, towards a low carbon economy’ and the festival will look at sustainability for the Sunshine Coast region.

Mayor Abbot said the Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, SEQ Catchments, and the University of the Sunshine Coast have formed a partnership to present this festival in such a way that we can all see how we as individuals can be involved in developing a sustainable future.

“In the last local election, the community beat a very loud drum for change and that change was to make the Sunshine Coast a truly sustainable region.

“The World Environment Day festival celebrates that desire and will give us all a good look at how we can be involved,” he said.

Mayor Abbot will lead a forum on ‘Implementing sustainability - the way forward for the Sunshine Coast’, facilitated by Carolyn Hutchinson. The session will look at how we can make the Sunshine Coast the most sustainable region in the country. Audience members are encouraged to input into this interactive session.

“The idea is, rather than telling you how we can make that change for you, the festival, will embrace sustainability in all forms, informing, educating, and entertaining you so well that you’ll leave the festival knowing how you can make a difference.” Mayor Abbot said.

Throughout the day, presentations and workshops offer advice and information on native gardening, green technology, permaculture, and other initiatives such as worm farming and solar cooking.

There is a full youth program, with workshops, displays, wildlife shows and didgeridoo making as well as pony hops, giant twister and a jumping castle.

Travel to the event by bus is free, simply catch a Sunbus from the Caloundra, Nambour, or Tewantin council offices at 8am, 10am, and 12pm, and return travel from the University is also available. Anyone travelling by designated festival buses or regular buses will go into a draw to win one of five family passes to Australia Zoo. A cycle bus will depart from the Caloundra council office at 8.30am.
