If you’re cheering on a young league star this year, a major $1.5 million upgrade to Maroochydore’s junior rugby league headquarters will be welcome news.

The upgrade by Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, includes new grandstand seating and shade, two change rooms, a first aid room and referee’s room and pathways.

Community Services Director Coralie Nichols said the upgrade was part of council’s long-term plan for the Wises Road club.

“The upgraded facilities will provide a better experience for the players, their families and friends,” Ms Nichols said.

“The tiered seating will be a significant improvement for spectators, providing improved comfort and all-weather protection, and the upgraded change rooms will meet minimum state competition standards.

“Improved pathways will make it easier and safer for people to get around the club site.

“This six hectare district sport and recreation precinct is home to many local sporting clubs and provides open space for formal and informal recreation to promote health and wellbeing.

“Better facilities will help the clubs encourage more people to get active and play sport including Oztag, touch and gridiron, and will also help the region attract more competition events.

“The Facility Development Plan for Maroochydore Junior Rugby League Club was adopted by council in 2014 as part of the Sunshine Coast Sport and Active Recreation Plan 2011 – 2026.”

The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing contributed $770,000 towards the makeover which is due for completion in July this year, weather permitting.
