Council has flicked the switch for the new security lights at the Alexandra Headlands Skate Park, with the aim of providing residents safer amenities.

Divisional councillor Chris Thompson is pleased with the upgrade to the park, and says council is committed to providing safety infrastructure for communities.

“Both users of the park and visitors to other amenities around the area have until now expressed feelings of being unsafe after dark.” Cr Thompson said.

“After consultation with key community stakeholders including Queensland Police Service and Street Angels, a crime prevention audit was undertaken which identified limited lighting in the area was of concern.”

“Council provided the funding to implement a lighting upgrade, to illuminate the park in the hope of reducing opportunities for crime and to allow police better visibility of the area.” Cr Thompson said.

Police and council will continue to monitor the skate park; however, both organisations are anticipating a positive effect.
