In celebration of National Simultaneous Storytime, children from across the Sunshine Coast will head to council libraries and parks, joining thousands of schools, libraries and playgroups across Australia to read the same book at 11am on Wednesday, May 23.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Now in its 18th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for grades one to six.

This year, the National Simultaneous Storytime book is Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said more than 686,000 children at more than 6100 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime in 2017, the biggest, most successful year yet.

“We’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Sunshine Coast kids reading Hickory Dickory Dash at the same time as everyone else around the country,” Cr McKay said.

“This annual event reinforces the State Government funded First 5 Forever initiative which encourages parents and caregivers to talk, read, sing and play with their child every day.”

Tony Wilson is an author and broadcaster who has been writing books for children for more than a decade.
