Improving drainage at Noosa Lions Park in time for Easter

Sunshine Coast Council is on track to put the community visions captured in the Noosa Lions Park Master Plan into action with subsurface drainage being installed to the whole site over the next two weeks.

This drainage will significantly improve the usability of the park after a rain event.

For local residents and visitors to the popular park this means most of the park will be closed from Monday 26 March until Thursday 5 April 2012 (weather permitting).

The drainage works will include replacing the main electrical switchboard with a larger switchboard capable of greater electrical loads. This upgrade will also assist the future staged works in the park.

An electrical event pillar will also be installed at the far corner of the park which will assist in future park events.

The existing taps in the park will be replaced with dual vandal resistant outlets with the addition of one extra tap location.

In March 2011, council invited Noosa Heads residents and the wider community to share their ideas to shape the vision for Noosa Heads Lions Park, located on the corner of Noosa Drive and Noosa Parade, Noosa Heads. The drainage works are part of this master plan for the park.

The final master plan reflects the community’s views and aspirations for enhancing the existing park facilities and improving the environmental, recreational, aesthetic, social amenity. The plan also incorporates the importance for the park to have the ability and infrastructure to host a limited number of major events for a wide range of user groups.

Council has scheduled capital funding for construction over the next three years. During the 2011-2012 financial year, council will implement the first two stages including electrical upgrades and drainage improvements so the park can be used immediately following periods of rainfall.

Some of the other park features in the landscape concept plan include:

• Improving pedestrian links and park entry points
• Upgrading the existing BBQ and play areas
• Maintaining the green open space character
• Revegetation and weed management to the hillside
• Upgrading the existing toilet block and shower facilities
• Passive seating and viewing area on Noosa Sound.
