Sunshine Coast residents now have until Sunday 2 December to provide comment on the proposed building upgrade at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny.

Sunshine Coast Council and the community based committee of the Reserve are seeking to renew the main buildings to meet the functional needs of the volunteers, researchers and staff and enhance the experience for visitors.

Evaluation of the upgrade options identified two optimal renewal options – both include an upgraded, more engaging education centre, a viewing platform and a new tea house. The only difference between the two recommended options is that one is one level and the other is two levels. Neither option will extend beyond the footprint of the existing building precinct or impact on the rainforest and the tea house will not operate outside daylight hours.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the consultation period had been extended in response to community requests.

"We’ve listened to the community and extended the timeframe for public comment," she said.

"Council has met with key stakeholders including the Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Mary Cairncross and the Reserve’s Management Committee and volunteers – now we are keen to hear from other members of the community.

"Depending on community feedback, the upgraded facilities may take the shape of either of the two recommended options or a combination of the options."

Council staff will be available to discuss the project at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre from 3.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursday 22 November 2012.

Visit Council's website for details about the proposals, including an independent feasibility study.
