To launch Mental Health Week from October 8-14, council invites the community to join Fusion Sunshine Coast’s 4.8km Walk/Run for Wellness from Maroochydore Rotary Park, Cotton Tree, on Sunday, October 8.
The walk from 8am will help raise awareness for mental health and promote wellbeing.
Immediately following the walk, there will be a range of fun and healthy activities for the community to join including Tai Chi, yoga, group fitness and drumming.
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said all are welcome to attend the Walk for Wellness Day which is an opportunity for the Sunshine Coast community to acknowledge and reflect upon mental health.
“Queensland Mental Health Week is an opportunity to unite and take action to promote overall mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health,” Cr McKay said.
“The aim of Mental Health Week is to promote social and emotional wellbeing to the community, encouraging people to maximise their health potential and enhance the coping capacity of communities, families and individuals while supporting mental health recovery.”
Cr McKay said the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy highlighted the importance of ensuring people are safe, healthy, feeling valued, embraced and connected, with council fostering opportunities for people to contribute to the strength of our community.
“Council is committed to supporting campaigns such as Mental Health Week so we are able to fully enjoy and appreciate other people, day-to-day life and our environment,” Cr McKay said.
“When we are mentally healthy we can form positive relationships, use our abilities to reach our potential and deal with life’s challenges.
“I encourage people experiencing, or at risk of mental ill-health, to get involved during Mental Health Week and attend the Fusion Sunshine Coast’s 4.8km Walk/Run for Wellness.”
To support our community, council has also developed a free online directory to help Sunshine Coast residents get the right services at the right time.
