Bring your garden to life with a visit to the Living Backyard zone

Our backyards are dynamic spaces that can be used for everything from football training to yoga practice.

But if your ideal garden is one that’s abuzz with a symphony of frogs, birds, butterflies and bees, don’t miss the chance to swing by the Queensland Garden Expo in Nambour this weekend.

Mayor Mark Jamieson today (July 13) visited the Living Backyard Zone and said the event offered the opportunity for visitors to experience some of the best our region has to offer.

“Sunshine Coast Council is proud to support this event, which is now in its 34th year,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Major events are important tourism driver for our region, as visitors want engaging and authentic experiences, whether it be visiting the Eumundi markets or visiting an event like the Queensland Garden Expo.

“It’s wonderful to see such a hub of activity here in Nambour and I would  encourage anyone with a green thumb to come and enjoy the incredible displays or take in one of the expert demonstrations.”

Mayor Jamieson had the chance to catch up with a number of expo guests at council’s Living Backyard display.

“Our backyards play a vital role in conserving and enhancing the native flora and fauna in our community, and the Living Backyard zone is a great place to find out about council’s environment and sustainability projects and programs and how you can get involved,” Mayor Jamieson said.

”The display includes vibrant displays and a full-size native garden with water feature.

“Local, native plants are for sale and visitors who want to know more about council’s bush care programs will also receive vouchers to be redeemed for native plants and trees.”

Event Manager Marion Beazley anticipated that 40,000 people were likely to attend the three-day event, with keen gardeners travelling from as far as New Zealand for their hit of gardening inspiration.

“Over the past three decades, the expo has developed a significant following and has earned its stripes as the gardening event with the largest and most comprehensive speaker program in Australia,” Ms Beazley said.

“A strong selling point is having the event in July when the weather is typically good. A lot of visitors from southern states come up and enjoy our beautiful weather which is a strong motivator for return visitation.”

The Queensland Garden Expo will be held at the Nambour Showgrounds this weekend starting on Friday, July 13 to Sunday, July 15.
