Fred Murray Building

Fred Murray Building

A prominent Sunshine Coast commercial building is being made available for lease, offering businesses the chance to be part of the resurgence of Nambour.

The Fred Murray building will be available for lease from early 2026.

This opportunity comes as the Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Government invest more than $5 million into the Nambour (Namba) Place Plan to revitalise the town centre and enhance its appeal to locals, visitors and investors.

Continuing the story of Fred Murray

Originally a Telstra building, the Fred Murray site was acquired by Council in 1993 and served as a key administration hub until the completion of Sunshine Coast City Hall in December 2022.

Since then, it has remained largely vacant while investigations were carried out for emergency accommodation or a housing solution by the Queensland Government.

Recently, there has been short-term occupancy by the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective.

Sunshine Coast Division 10 Councillor David Law said the leasing of the Fred Murray building represented a pivotal moment for Nambour.

“This is a great opportunity for businesses, small, medium or large, to be part of Nambour’s future,” Cr Law said.

“It is hoped that new tenants will also provide a significant boost to the local economy as well as building their own success story in Nambour.”

The building offers two levels of functional office space, secure basement parking and end-of-trip facilities.

Tender submissions

Council is now seeking tender submissions from businesses ready to contribute to shaping the next chapter of Nambour’s CBD.

Commercial, economic and social outcomes will be considered and preference will be given to a single tenant for the entire building or whole-floor tenancies.

While there had been community suggestions to repurpose the Fred Murray building for emergency and/or transitional accommodation, Council and the Queensland Government have clarified that conversion to residential uses is not viable.

Significant investment would be required to meet building compliance standards for such a transformation.

Council will continue to retain and operate the nearby Eddie De Vere building as a hub for Council staff, customer service counter, Local Disaster Coordination Centre and a venue for community use through the foyer and the Namba Meeting Place.

This leasing opportunity aligns with a broader effort to revitalise Nambour as a creative, connected and economically vibrant centre.

The CBD is currently undergoing a major facelift, including new pedestrian crossings, improved walkability and enhanced public spaces.
