Federal Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government to visit North Shore Community Centre
The Hon Simon Crean MP, Federal Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, will this afternoon join Sunshine Coast Major Projects Councillor Debbie Blumel to inspect the North Shore Community Centre and meet with the Management Committee.
The $4.2 million centre, which has received $3.5 million in Australian Government funding, is well on its way to becoming a hive of activity with the newly established Management Committee working hard to ensure the centre runs smoothly when it opens later this year.
Major Projects Portfolio holder Councillor Debbie Blumel said construction was progressing well and the excitement is starting to build among the whole community as opening day approaches.
"This afternoon is a great opportunity for the Management Committee to meet The Hon Simon Crean to explain their vision for the centre and show him first hand the fantastic work that has been done to date," Cr Blumel said.
"The Management Committee will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the centre when it opens later this year.
"Council will play a mentoring role for the first couple of years, and after that will completely hand over the running of the centre to the committee."
Cr Blumel said there are 15 members on the committee with representation from local businesses, schools and resident associations.
"At the moment, with the guidance of council staff, the committee is working out the operating guidelines for the centre.
"At a recent committee meeting we worked through which types of user groups might be able to use the space and council officers shared information regarding available grants that the committee could access to support their work.
"Council staff will continue to work with the management committee as we get closer to the opening."
The North Shore Community Centre will accommodate the community’s needs to come together for social, recreational and cultural activities, as well as being a centre for the delivery of community services in the area.
It aims to be a prominent focal point by offering an inviting place for gatherings and community events, such as performances (drama, concerts), exhibitions, school discos, presentation nights, workshops, educational classes, play-group activities, youth and senior citizens’ programs.
