Essential Noosa roadworks bring bonus for boardwalk

Public safety is at the forefront of Sunshine Coast Council plans to close Park Road at Noosa Heads for up to 12 weeks while essential remedial work is done.

Division 11 Councillor, Russell Green, said the closure – which is still a number of weeks away ­– was essential to ensure the stability of a 200m section of the road between the Main Beach car park and First Point.

“Park Road is, of course, a very popular road as it is the main access to the Noosa National Park and its beaches,’’ Cr Green said.

“The decision to close it to provide a permanent solution to its historical stability issues was not taken lightly. These works quite simply have to be done to ensure it is safe.”

Councillor Green said that, over a number of years, there has been slippage on the low side of the road and instability has caused problems for both the roadway and the existing timber boardwalk. To fix it, council needs to build a retaining structure supported by piles bored in to the ocean side of the road.

Constraints around the site mean that the work will require closure of the road for up to 12 weeks and parts of the boardwalk will be demolished to achieve construction access.

“This gives us a golden opportunity to widen and improve the existing boardwalk which is 20 years old and in need of replacement,” Cr Green said.

Council is currently assessing tenders for the project. It is expected that the contract will be awarded in late June with construction to take place between July and November.

The road closure will mean no access for traffic for the duration of the works, other than for local residents and essential services. Council will provide them with an alternative route, under control of a traffic warden.
