I would like to wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous new year. Over 45,000 people welcomed in 2015 at Council’s very successful Mooloolaba NYE celebrations. A great variety of family-friendly entertainment – and luckily, some fine weather – meant everyone enjoyed themselves. The Sunshine Coast is in for a good 2015 and I look forward to working with many of you throughout the year.

I hope you’ve had a chance to check out the upgrades to Alexandra Parade these holidays. This $3.5 million streetscape project has delivered a safer, more functional and visually appealing environment for the benefit of locals, visitors and businesses. This is a terrific project for the Alexandra Headland community because it has upgraded a heavily utilised area to a standard this area deserves.
As well as aesthetic improvements like significant landscaping, new footpaths, new plantings and improved car park areas, two signalised pedestrian crossings enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists through this busy area.

As my councillor colleague Jason OPray detailed in his column last week, Council’s new Disaster Hub provides a range of critical information on one easy-to-use site. You’ll find details on how to prepare for a disaster, which is especially important at this time of year, and important information such as weather warnings, road closures and evacuation centres when events do occur.
Take a look at www.disaster.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, and encourage your friends and family to visit the site and prepare their homes for possible disaster events.
