Children’s interactive library corners ready to be explored

More than 50,500 happy under-eight year olds and their families have explored Sunshine Coast Council’s interactive library Corners and this number is about to increase.

The Corner is a program which provides space within the children’s library, that is dedicated to under eight year olds and their families.

It is designed to encourage curious and creative ideas and offers children and parents the freedom to experiment and play with objects and ideas.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said four libraries had new Corners which have just landed and will be staying to the end of November.

“The Corner provides the opportunity for children to explore, create, think and imagine,” Cr McKay said.

“Highly popular and interactive, these children’s spaces feature arts-based activities based on the ‘learn through play’ philosophy and they are now heading to Beerwah, Caloundra, Kawana and Maroochydore libraries.

“The Marketplace Corner will be installed at Caloundra Library and includes fun interactive spaces consisting of brightly coloured market stalls.

"Each stall encourages children to participate in their favourite imaginary shop play whilst developing social and numeracy skills.

“Children at Maroochydore Library will be able to enjoy the magical castle in the Fairytales Corner.

"Children can dress up in costumes, play in the castle, listen to stories of mystical lands and undertake play activities.

“The Look at Me Corner which features a retro designed kitchen to encourage imaginative and role playing will be installed at Beerwah Library and the Animalia Corner featuring a forest which is home to the stump cubby will be at Kawana Library.

“Council’s friendly staff are available to encourage children to learn through play, story, song and games.

"Of course parents are also invited to join in the fun with their children."
