Mayor Mark Jamieson said today’s announcement by the Minister for Local Government is another step on the path to de-amalgamation.
“I welcome the announcement of a transfer manager and the regulations – but there will be a price to pay for the people of the Sunshine Coast,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“De-amalgamation will see a 20 per cent reduction in general rates for Sunshine Coast Council.
“We will have to find corresponding reductions in our operating costs – staffing, materials and service levels - and/or increase our operating revenues.
“This, together with the loss of efficiencies from the united regional approach to local government in this region, means there are significant changes ahead.
“Our organisation review is already responding to this issue, with work now going ahead on the overall organisation design for the continuing Sunshine Coast Council.
“There is still clarification need for the transition framework isn’t perfect, the rules are generally now set so we need to work with them and get on with the challenging job ahead.
“At this stage I am still reading through the materials, but at first glance some key details are:
- The transfer manager for Noosa will be Peter Franks who has experience in local government in Queensland and Victoria
- The transfer committee consists of the CEO of the existing council and the transfer manager
- The Noosa Local Advisory Committee will include Local MP Glen Elmes, a representative from both the Noosa and Cooroy Chambers of Commerce, and a representative from Tourism Noosa
- Fresh elections are to be held on a date to be gazetted in the final quarter of this year
“Many questions still exist and I hope the methodology is released as soon as possible so we can begin the process and provide certainty for residents.
“In the meantime, Council will continue to get on with the business of delivering quality services and infrastructure to the community
“We have a great future and Council is creating the right conditions for job-creating investments through projects such as the Maroochydore CBD and the airport expansion.
“Council is also leveraging significant regional projects such as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.”
