Mayor Mark Jamieson today launched the Digital Sunshine Coast action plan in conjunction with Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast.

A new website has also been launched today -  www.digitalsunshinecoast.com.au – a portal highlighting a range of news, stories, events and information that will assist businesses and the broader community adopt digital tools and technologies.

“These two projects are very important to the region,” Mayor Jamieson said at the launch held at University of the Sunshine Coast.

“They were identified as priorities under the Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) in 2013. REDS called for the preparation of a Digital Productivity and Participation Plan as well as the development of an online information portal to bring the industry and opportunities together in once central place.”

Mayor Jamieson thanked RDA chair Max Standage and CEO Russell Mason for assuming the project lead role.

“But they weren’t alone, as a core group of industry champions has been consistently consulted on the development of the plan and web portal – and there has been true collaboration across all levels of government to further digital opportunities and innovation on the Sunshine Coast as well,” he said.

RDA Sunshine Coast CEO, Russell Mason, said that many of the projects and actions listed in the draft plan were already well underway.

“For example, the pilot CoderDojo Sunshine Coast program which is aimed at providing free coding workshops for children was fully subscribed within 24 hours, and three new workshops have just opened up for enrolment,” he said.

“The success of the recent Startup Weekend at the Innovation Centre has led to future Startup Weekend events including a dedicated Youth Startup Weekend for Sunshine Coast-based high school students this October; a first of its kind in Australia.”

These events and many other initiatives are listed on the newly created Digital Sunshine Coast website, including a showcase of local digital champions in the region.
