Alternate site needed for North Shore Community Centre
A recommendation to place the current location and configuration of the proposed Maroochy North Shore Community Centre project on hold until alternative potential sites are identified was supported by councillors on the Service Delivery Committee meeting today before being referred to next week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council for adoption.
A recommendation to place the current location and configuration of the proposed Maroochy North Shore Community Centre project on hold until alternative potential sites are identified was supported by councillors on the Service Delivery Committee meeting today before being referred to next week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council for adoption.
The recommendation follows the refusal of a Material Change of Use application by the Department of Natural Resources and Water for the current proposed site at 12 Menzies Road. The refusal was given on environmental grounds (flora and fauna).
Council had allocated a budget of approximately $800,000 for the initial stages of the project in the 07-08 financial year, with feasibility studies and concept design already undertaken.
Division 8 Councillor Debbie Blumel said it was essential that Council continue to progress the project and immediately assess other potential and more appropriate locations.
“It is important that we actively investigate similar sized locations in close proximity to the original site,” Cr Blumel said.
“This could also include investigating any co-location opportunities including the Maroochy North Shore Multi-Sports as one potential site which is located very close to the originally propose site and is equally central to the communities being served.”
Council will soon be calling for membership of a community reference group for input into the progress of the North Shore Community Centre project.
