Preparations are well advanced in readiness for the inaugural visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Sunshine Coast later this month.

He will visit the Chenrezig Institute in Eudlo on Thursday 16 June and will talk with senior high school students and the Sunshine Coast community, bless the Garden of Enlightenment, officially re-open the renovated Gompa (temple) and provide guidance to the local Buddhist community.

Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay said it would be a very special occasion for the Sunshine Coast and Eudlo to host a visit by the Dalai Lama.

"It is very rare for an area outside of a capital city to host a visit by Dalai Lama," Cr McKay said.

"More than 3500 people are expected at the event at the Chenrezig Institute and this is a wonderful opportunity for many people to experience a real taste of the Sunshine Coast hinterland."

Cr McKay added that an event of this importance and size is also expected to cause some disruptions in and around the Eudlo township on the day.

"With the increase in traffic expected on the day it is very important that any disruptions for local residents are limited. I have been working with council staff, the event organisers, police and the local community to ensure that we keep the visiting traffic off many of the smaller local roads.

"Visiting traffic will be directed into Eudlo on the main approaches and then onto to the designated park and ride area that will be established at the Eudlo Showgrounds.

"Local residents will still be able to pass through the closures and are advised to have ready a driver’s licence with current address, rates notice or other addressed correspondence with a current address."

Road closures will be in place in the Eudlo area on Thursday 16 June from 8am to approximately 5pm. Roads impacted include:

  • Highlands and adjoining Roads
  • Mossybank and Logwoods Roads
  • Neill, Brooks and Cumner Roads
  • Sullivan, Gerrard, Rambert and Upper Rambert Roads
