Glow-in-the-dark mushrooms, cute and cuddly marsupials, wise owls and mystic flying-foxes are just some of the interesting plants and animals that appear in the bush, the rainforest and even in our Sunshine Coast backyards at night.

If you’ve ever wondered what these captivating creatures get up to while we sleep, a range of experts will be on hand at Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre at Maleny over the coming months to explore what happens “After Dark”.

Local wildlife expert Dr Les Hall will uncover the many species of captivating creatures that form the “night shift” at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve on June 20, while children’s author and publisher Jill Morris will share the highlights of a life spent bringing creatures of the Australian bush alive on the page in July.

For those with an eye on the sky, USQ Adjunct Professor and Sydney Observatory consultant astronomer Dr Nick Lomb will pose the question “who stole the night?” and will examine the challenges of outdoor light in our cities and towns on August 16.

Professional bat behaviourist and QUT researcher Professor Stuart Parsons will address some common myths surrounding flying foxes on August 22, while Dr Sandra Tuscynska will explain the evolutionary reasons for why some mushrooms glow in the dark in her presentation - Magic mushrooms: the wonder of bioluminescence.
