Farewell to one of our greatest citizens

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of the Sunshine Coast's oldest resident, Monica Guy, at the age of 108.

Known for her cheeky smile, honesty, energy and vibrancy, Mrs Guy was still very active up until her passing on April 10.

Born in New Zealand, Mrs Guy moved to a Darling Downs farm when she was three before her family moved to Buderim in 1919.

They bought land from the Guy family, who were the first settlers to own a property on the mountain.

Monica eventually won the heart of Harold, the youngest of the Guy sons.

The couple’s daughter, Heather, said her mother loved to race horses against the boys in her youth and also enjoyed playing tennis.

Later in life, she took up painting while always maintaining her competitiveness in other pursuits and a clear love of life.

She was one of a group instrumental in the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Art Group with her paintings adorning the walls of Brisbane’s Parliament House, Council chambers, local hospitals, private collections and Buderim’s Community Hall.

Mrs Guy was awarded life memberships to an array of Buderim’s institutions and societies, including the CWA, Buderim Garden Club, The War Widows Guild, The Buderim Historical Society and Sunshine Coast Art Group.

Even when she passed 100 years of age, she marked each birthday with a glass of pink champagne, with her broad smile, blonde hair and clear skin commented on by all who met her.

On behalf of all residents of our Sunshine Coast, I pass on my thoughts and prayers to Mrs Guy’s family and many friends as they say farewell to a wonderful lady who will always be remembered as one of our greatest citizens.

She made an outstanding contribution to our community over many decades and will be deeply missed.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Mrs Guy’s life at a service at the Buderim Crematorium Chapel, Mooloolaba Road, Buderim, on Monday, April 20 from 10.30am.
