As part of council’s library holiday fun, USC Quidditch team members today (January 9) took young Harry Potter characters through their paces at a Kidditch 101 workshop held at Kawana Library.
Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said more than 2300 children from across the Coast registered to immerse themselves in the world of heroes and villains in council’s libraries over the summer holiday break.
“With everything from Harry Potter parties to themed crafts and activities, there has been something for kids of all ages,” Cr Connolly said.
“Kawana’s Kevin Asmus Park was taken over by children dressed in their favourite Harry Potter character learning the basics of a sport inspired by the game played by fictional teenage wizard Harry Potter – Quidditch.
“The children were extremely lucky as the USC Quidditch team, the Dementors, were sharing their expertise in this growing sport which Australia made history by winning the 2016 Quidditch World Cup.
“I’m sure some of the children who participated today will be inspired to pursue the sport and be amongst the future generation of Quidditch players.”
There is still time for heroes and villains to register to pick up the last remaining spots in Sunshine Coast Libraries’ holiday program. Visit library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au today.
Quidditch Fast Facts
Quidditch is a fictional sport played by characters in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter fantasy-fiction book series. Though the game is played on flying brooms, muggles (non-magical folks) adapted the game for the ground, with the aptly-named version, 'Ground Quidditch'.
Ground Quidditch is played in countries across the world, and is a growing sport in its own right. The Australian national competition, the QUAFL Cup, held by Quidditch Australia annually has been running for almost six years. Quidditch has proved to be extremely popular within universities and has an established league and an annual Australian championship tournament.
Quidditch is a sport of two teams of seven players each mounted on broomsticks played on a hockey rink-sized pitch.
The local USC Dementors team was founded in 2014 and has evolved into a network of 60 players. In their short careers, the Dementors have competed in the inaugural Unibattle tournament in 2015, bringing home silver and breaking a record as being the first Queensland team to ever beat an interstate team at a national level. The Dementors competed in their first QUAFL in December 2015, entering the tournament unranked and leaving in 10th place out of 19 teams, gaining a lot of experience in the process.
The USC Quidditch League hold games every Wednesday evening from 6pm on Rugby Field 1 at USC Sippy Downs. All are welcome to watch, play and make some great friends!
