Sunshine Coast residents are lining up to reduce their electricity costs and earn up to $600 in rewards by joining the ENERGEX Energy Conservation Community program.
Supported by the Sunshine Coast Council, the program encourages residents to make simple changes to the way they use electricity during peak demand periods – between 4pm and 8pm and on very hot days.
Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said the program, which supports council's endorsed Energy Transition Plan, had already received a huge response from the community.
"The response has been outstanding with 3,300 homes already registered to the program and we're hoping to make that 6,000 by 2015," Cr Jones said.
"Council understands the cost of living pressures that residents face and this program could assist in reducing those pressures by helping to lower electricity costs and providing up to $600 in rewards for people to get started.
"There are a range of offers to suit all Sunshine Coast households with an air-conditioner, swimming pool or hot water system.
"The program plays a major part in creating a more sustainable electricity network on the Sunshine Coast and I encourage all Sunshine Coast households to get involved."
For each registered household, ENERGEX adds $50 to a community partnership fund, which last year raised more than $70,000.
This money is then used by local community groups and schools in energy conservation, sustainability and environmental projects.
Council is holding information sessions at local libraries during April and May. Contact your local library for more information or go to council’s website.
