Council & novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

Council is continuing to work closely with the Queensland and Australian governments to plan, prepare, respond and recover from the impacts of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Council is committed to supporting Queensland Health as the lead agency responsible for responding to COVID-19.

Status of facilities and outdoor spaces

We are working to reopen local facilities where it is safe and practical to do so, putting in place:

  • restrictions on patron numbers
  • ongoing social distancing
  • hygiene requirements.

The safety and wellbeing of our community is council’s priority as facilities reopen. Please remember the 1.5 metre social distancing requirement and practice good hand hygiene. Restrictions regarding visitor/user numbers apply at council facilities.

We will provide updates as decisions about reopenings are made (see details below).

Holiday parks 

The following holiday parks reopen for intrastate travel from 2 June.

  • Dicky Beach
  • Mooloolaba Beach
  • Maroochydore Beach
  • Cotton Tree
  • Mudjimba Beach
  • Coolum Beach 

Beaches

Surf Life Saving Queensland advised that all beach patrols and lifeguard services across Queensland has reverted to a surveillance service from Saturday, 28 March 2020. The red and yellow flags will not be on the beach to mark the designated swimming area.

If you are visiting the beach, ensure you are staying 1.5 metres from others. Please read the blackboards and signage at beach access points and speak with a lifeguard before going into the water to confirm where it is safe to swim. Information regarding Surf Life Saving Queensland changes can be found on the by visiting the Surf Life Saving Queensland website.

All beach carparks are open. Boat ramps and pontoons are also open.

Council parks 

Playgrounds, exercise equipment and skate parks open

All playgrounds, exercise equipment /fitness stations and skate parks across the Sunshine Coast have reopened. In line with social distancing requirements, there is a maximum of 20 people able to use a facility at any one time. Dog parks and off-leash areas are also open.

While council has increased cleaning of many facilities, COVID-19 hygiene is everyone's responsibility. Residents are reminded to wash their hands regularly and observe the 1.5 metres social distancing requirements when using public spaces.

Personal Training/Bootcamps

Personal trainers are able to hold sessions for up to 10 people (including the trainer) on council land as long as they can have an existing Low impact/Commercial use permit and can demonstrate COVIDsafe practices. For more details visit Community Land Permits.

Public Barbeques 

Public barbeques will be turned back on by 6 June. 

Waterfalls 

  • Gardners Falls in Maleny and the access road/carpark in Obi Lane, reopened from 2 June for up to 20 people.
  • Buderim Forest Park swimming hole reopened from 2 June for up to 20 people.  

National parks

All national park and forest day use areas and walking tracks are open with the exception of some popular rock pool destinations. For details about Queensland Government national parks, conservation parks, resource reserves, state forests and recreation areas visit the Queensland Parks website.

Recycle markets and rubbish tips

Council’s recycle markets at the following locations are now open for business.

  • Buderim Resource Recovery Centre
  • Caloundra Resource Recovery Centre
  • Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre
  • Witta Resource Recovery Centre

All rubbish tips are open for business, only cashless transactions are being accepted. Free coarse mulch and sales of fine mulch and crushed concrete sales continue, subject to available. Check availability before visiting.

The Sunshine Coast region will continue to mark its agricultural show holidays with public holidays, despite organisers of the Maleny Show and the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show cancelling due to COVID-19.

The gazetted public holidays include the Sunshine Coast (Nambour) Show Day, to be held on Friday 12 June 2020 and the Caloundra (Maleny) Show Day which was held on Friday 29 May 2020.

Events across the Sunshine Coast have been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. 

Council events and events held at council venues

Mass gatherings of more than 500 people were cancelled as at Monday 16 March 2020.

Council will continue to follow the advice of the Australian Government and Queensland Health for its own events. Council is working with event organisers. We encourage you to follow and put in place risk mitigation measures as directed by the Australian Government and Queensland Health. Help is available to re-schedule events and event permits to a future date.

Council's Stay, Connect, Create program aims to help keep our community informed, inspired and entertained during COVID-19.  Here you'll find a variety of online resources including: workshops, activities for kids, virtual tours and more.

Lift Project

Council has partnered with Lift Lifestyle Medicine to offer The Lift Project Sunshine Coast at no cost to all Sunshine Coast residents.

B-Well & Prosper

The B-Well & Prosper program offers access to business and well-being resources to small business owners and their employees.




Event permits

To support businesses during the COVID-19 restrictions, council has decided to waive application fees for:

  • weddings
  • temporary entertainment events, and
  • commercial use permits.

Event organisers must follow the recommendations from the Australian Government and Queensland Health. Ticket holders should contact event organisers directly for any queries related to non-council organised events.

Federal, state and local governments are all providing support for small businesses who are affected by novel coronavirus. Business owners can find business support information about available opitons.

Professional advice support program 

Council has spoken to many businesses that have reported confusion, anxiety and uncertainty surrounding their business due to:

  • overload of information
  • multiple economic stimulus packages
  • increasing business and social distancing restrictions.

As a result, council has put together a Professional Advice Support Program.

Council Libraries have now reopened except for the Maleny Library which is undergoing refurbishment until June.


Council's Sport and Recreation team has put together a range of information and resources for community sporting club and the active recreation industry. The aim is to assist clubs and volunteers stay well informed of changes and plan a way forward. Visit Sport & Recreation Covid-19 support page.

Council's Development Information counters and Customer Contact counters are temporarily closed. No meetings are currently held at council offices.

In response to the unique situation COVID-19 has presented us, council is adapting its approach to grants and funding to meet changing community needs and has announced new grants, COVID-19 Community Response Grants, and has expanded Emergency Grants program.

Rates

Council is reassuring ratepayers that we are not charging interest on overdue accounts up to 30 June. The 2020/21 budget process will determine arrangements that apply from 1 July 2020.

We are assisting ratepayers having financial difficulties with flexible payment arrangements for outstanding rates. Please contact council if you are having difficulty paying your rates by email to rates@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. We are here to help you.

Parking meters in Caloundra and Birtinya 

Council has turned off all on-street parking meters in Birtinya and Caloundra until at least June 30, 2020. Parking time limits will still apply to encourage turnover to maximise parking availability.

Resource recovery centres (rubbish tips)  fees

Council’s resource recovery centres will accept cashless (card only) payments only from Monday 6 April 2020.

If you need to visit council’s waste facilities, we ask you to use tap-and-pay (PayWave) to make your payment.

The resource recovery centres remain open. Household rubbish collection will continue as usual until further notice. Our resource recovery centres are currently experiencing high numbers of customer visits and longer wait times. This is due to people spending more time at home doing home and garden maintenance. The move to cashless payments should reduce the risk of passing on infection via cash handling. 

Council encourages you to use general waste bins as much as possible to dispose of general waste.



Council’s customer service counters and reception desks are closed until further notice.

Appointments will be available for residents who need to meet with council’s customer service officers and can be requested via telephone or an online form.
