Council supports a number of additional health and wellbeing initiatives on the Sunshine Coast.

Heart Foundation Walking

Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest network of free community-based walking groups, with volunteer walk organisers leading the walks.

Walking is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Walking has a very low risk of injury as it is low impact (not jarring on the joints) and doesn't require any special equipment or training. It helps reduce stress, be more alert, have a healthier body and build strong relationships. 

Council helps to coordinate over 40 free Heart Foundation walks across the Coast each week. Enjoy the beauty of the Coast while walking with a group and making new friends.

Walking for at least 30 minutes a day provides a range of health benefits including:

  • maintaining healthy weight
  • increased fitness and strength
  • improved self-esteem and mental health.

Members receive some great benefits including:

  • special offers
  • regular newsletters
  • incentives and prizes to help keep walkers motivated.

We are always looking for volunteer walk organisers to start new walking groups on the Coast.

Council has brought the global community running phenomenon, parkrun to the Sunshine Coast. Open to everyone, parkrun is a free, five-kilometre timed run (or walk) held 7am every Saturday morning from a local park. On the Sunshine Coast, parkrun is held at six locations:

Kawana Surf Life Saving Club - Cooper's Lookout (carpark to the north), Buddina
Woorim Park - Landsborough Parade, Golden Beach
Brightwater Sports Ground - Cnr of Heliconia Street and Cordyline Place, Mountain Creek
Mudjimba Beach Surf Club - Cnr Mudjimba Beach Esplanade and Mudjimba Beach Road, Mudjimba
Parklands Regional Park (Bushland trail) - Radar Hill Road, Kulangoor / Nambour
Baringa Sports Grounds - Baringa Drive, Baringa (Aura)

How parkrun works

The key to parkrun’s success is the timing technology. Runners register online and then print a barcode that is scanned at the end of each session. This is matched with the runner’s finishing time. All the results are posted online by midday, so runners can compare their performance with their friends' times and against previous times.

Most of the events have over 100 runners and walkers each week. All ages and abilities can take part; the oldest member is over 90 years! Participants are welcome to bring prams and dogs.

My health for life Program

My health for life is a free, six-month program where you work with a health coach to achieve your health goals.

It is a State government-funded initiative, delivered by an alliance of health organisations, and is designed to help Queenslanders stay well and lessen their risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Choosing either small group sessions, or one-on-one phone coaching, you explore topics such as nutrition, physical activity, understanding your personal risk of developing health conditions and how to make healthier choices a part of everyday life.

With the support of your coach, you will also develop an action plan. Whether your goal is to get more active, eat better, stress less, or lose weight, the focus is on building a step-by-step plan to help you achieve your goals over time.

Program fast facts

  • The program is personalised to participants’ needs
  • It is delivered by qualified health professionals in local areas
  • Participate in either group-based sessions or telephone-based health coaching
  • It involves six sessions over six months – the time commitment required is not big
  • The first session is a personalised one-on-one appointment
  • The program particularly suits people who have not found traditional weight loss or exercise programs suitable.
