The Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre, previously known as the Bilai Environment Education Centre, provides teaching programs associated with:
- wetlands and estuarine studies (section of a river meeting the sea)
- catchment analyses.
The program also includes study of local ecosystems including:
- rocky foreshores
(An ecosystem is a set of relationships among the living resources, habitats and residents of an area, including plants, trees, animals, fish, birds, water, soil and people.)
The centre was established to raise awareness of wetlands and related integrated catchment management issues. Over 7000 students from preschool to TAFE visit the centre each year, which has become a focus for mangrove and wetland studies within the Maroochy River Catchment.
